Climate Investment Funds

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) is an $8.5b climate action fund working in 72 emerging economies across the world. For over 10 years, we have specialised in empowering local transformations to support our global goals in the areas of clean technology, energy access, climate resilience and sustainable forests in developing and middle-income countries. In the last 4 years, CIF has:

  • Developed and hosted a multi-sector, multi-stakeholder community called the transformational change learning partnership (TCLP) to deepen, advance, and promote understanding of transformational change in climate action.
  • Established the Technical Assistance Facility which backs upstream activities to strengthen policies and regulatory environments, build human and institutional capacities, and design market-facing innovative climate solutions. All activities have one overriding goal: accelerating clean energy investments. A window tailored to COVID-19 recovery helps countries restart economies through low-emission, climate-resilient growth unlocking socioeconomic and environmental benefits.

For the Changemakers campaign we would like to showcase some of our favourite changemakers from our strategic programmes:

  • Clean Technologies: Our $5.4b Clean Technology Fund has been working with developing counties to finance and scale up renewable energy technologies like concentrated solar power, wind turbines and battery storage in countries as diverse as Chile, South Africa and Morocco. In our concentrated solar projects alone, the ground-breaking projects delivered by changemakers on the ground has contributed to 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy generation.
  • Climate Resilience: To date, $1.2b of investment and resources has been channelled to changemakers on the ground in some of the worlds’ most climate vulnerable countries. Funds been directed to places like people and teams from Small Island Developing States (SIDS), who are on the very front line of climate vulnerability and vitally need support to upgrade climate data and build, or rebuild, climate smart designs.
  • Energy Access: Through this programme, $720m has been directed to some of the world’s poorest countries to invest into the acceleration of the scale up of renewable energies. By empowering people and projects on the ground to demonstrate the economic, social and environmental viability of renewables, as well as supporting hard to reach regions with game-changing concepts like the roll out of mini-grids, our changemakers are providing more life giving clean energy to those who need it most.
  • Sustainable Forests: One of our programmes that is deeply connected to its’ changemakers, empowering pioneering people in governments, businesses and local communities, to develop protective policies, drive sustainable forest management practices and empower indigenous communities on the ground. Changemakers we’ve had the fortune to work with in this programme range from government officials through to indigenous tribes and women in communities who depend on the forest for their livelihoods.

Independent evaluations have shown that CIF has succeeded in accelerating progress in the areas of clean technologies, energy access, climate resilience, and sustainable forests. After widespread consultation to identify next-frontier climate challenges, CIF is pioneering investments in five new areas: the transition from coal, climate-smart cities, nature-based solutions, industry decarbonization, and renewable energy integration. In 2021, recognizing the urgency of this mission and strong demand from developing countries, the G7 committed up to $2 billion in additional resources for CIF.

Across CIF programmes, there are many brilliant changemakers to choose from. Here is just a small selection of the incredible changemakers on the ground that make all our work possible.
